Testosterone Enanthate vs Propionate Dosing

Testosterone enanthate and propionate are the exact same testosterone molecule wearing two different ester chains: enanthate has a long chain that releases slowly, so it is injected once or twice a week, while propionate has a short chain that clears fast, so it is injected every one to two days. The weekly milligrams can be identical — what changes is how often you inject and how many syringe units each shot works out to, and that unit count depends only on the vial concentration, never on which ester it is.

Why two esters of the same hormone behave so differently

Both enanthate and propionate are 17β-esters of testosterone — a fatty-acid chain is bolted onto the testosterone molecule so it dissolves in oil and releases slowly from the injection site. Once injected, esterases in the body cleave the chain off and free testosterone is what actually circulates. The longer the ester chain, the more slowly the depot releases, and the longer the drug's half-life.

Propionate carries a short three-carbon chain, so it is hydrolysed and cleared quickly — its elimination half-life is on the order of 0.8 days (about 20 hours). Enanthate's seven-carbon chain drags that out to roughly 4.5–7 days. That single chemical difference is why enanthate holds serum testosterone in range with a weekly (or twice-weekly) injection, while propionate falls off within a couple of days and has to be topped up every one to two days to avoid a roller-coaster.

Neither ester is “stronger.” A milligram of testosterone is a milligram of testosterone once the ester is cleaved; the numbers on the two labels simply describe how the same payload is timed. Because propionate needs frequent injections and tends to cause more injection-site soreness, longer esters like enanthate and cypionate are the standard choice for testosterone-replacement therapy.

Turning either dose into syringe units

The label is in milligrams; the syringe reads in units, and a U-100 insulin syringe holds 100 units per 1 mL. So the conversion is identical for both esters: divide your dose (mg) by the vial concentration (mg/mL) to get mL, then multiply by 100 to get units.

Worked example 1 — enanthate, weekly

Enanthate vial at 200 mg/mL, dose 100 mg once weekly.

100 mg ÷ 200 mg/mL = 0.5 mL.   0.5 mL × 100 = 50 units, once a week.

Worked example 2 — enanthate, split twice weekly

Same 100 mg/week enanthate, same 200 mg/mL vial, split into two shots.

50 mg ÷ 200 mg/mL = 0.25 mL = 25 units, twice a week. Same weekly mg, steadier levels, smaller draws.

Worked example 3 — propionate, every other day

Propionate vial at 100 mg/mL. To match ~100 mg/week you inject roughly every other day, about 28 mg per shot across ~3.5 shots.

28 mg ÷ 100 mg/mL = 0.28 mL = 28 units, every other day. Many people round to 25–30 units EOD.

Worked example 4 — propionate, 50 mg EOD

A higher propionate schedule: 50 mg every other day from a 100 mg/mL vial.

50 mg ÷ 100 mg/mL = 0.5 mL = 50 units per injection — roughly 175 mg/week across 3.5 shots.

Worked example 5 — same mg, different concentration

The identical 50 mg dose from a 200 mg/mL vial instead: 50 ÷ 200 = 0.25 mL × 100 = 25 units.

Double the concentration, half the units — which is why the ester name never tells you the unit count on its own.

At 100 mg/mL, propionate uses twice the units of a 200 mg/mL enanthate draw for the same milligrams — a bigger volume per shot, on top of injecting more often.

Frequently asked questions

Is propionate stronger than enanthate?

No. Both release the same testosterone once the ester is cleaved. Propionate just releases it faster, so it is dosed in smaller amounts more often. Milligram for milligram of actual testosterone, they are equivalent.

Can I inject enanthate every other day like propionate?

You can inject enanthate more frequently to smooth out levels, but you do not need to — its long half-life already holds levels steady across a week. Propionate's short half-life is what forces the frequent schedule, not preference.

Why does propionate need more units for the same dose?

It usually comes in a lower concentration (100 mg/mL vs 200–250 mg/mL for enanthate), so the same milligrams occupy more volume and therefore more units. Units track concentration, not the ester.

Which ester is used for TRT?

Longer esters such as enanthate and cypionate are the standard, FDA-labelled choices for testosterone-replacement therapy. Propionate's frequent injections and injection-site soreness make it a niche option; always follow your prescriber.
